Weaponized DOJ? Newsom Cries Hit List

Man speaking at podium surrounded by smiling people.

California’s liberal governor is now crying “weaponized DOJ” after years of using state power to punish his own opponents.

Story Snapshot

  • Gavin Newsom says the Trump Justice Department is investigating him and his wife and claims it is all political.
  • Reports say federal agents are digging into his wife’s nonprofits and tax issues, and ties to big corporate donors.
  • Newsom publicly alleges President Trump personally ordered the probe because he may run for president.
  • So far there are no public charges, and the Justice Department is not commenting, leaving many facts unknown.

Newsom says Trump “put him on a hit list”

Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom went public this week with a dramatic claim: he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are under federal investigation by the United States Department of Justice, and he says President Donald Trump is behind it.[6] In a video shared on social media, Newsom said federal agents have knocked on the doors of “family, friends and former employees” asking for records, and he insists they “have not found a crime” but are “simply trying to find one.”[5]

Newsom framed the investigation as part of a personal “hit list,” saying, “Today, my wife and I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us.”[8] He also claimed the motive is political, arguing Trump is “coming after” him because he is considering a run for president and has been a loud critic of the president’s record and character.[2][5] Newsom’s office posted an official statement on the California governor’s website calling it a “weaponized DOJ investigation.”[6]

What is reportedly being investigated around the Newsoms

While Newsom focuses on Trump, reporters are finding more specific targets: multiple outlets say federal agents are looking at people close to Newsom and his wife, as well as her nonprofit work and tax issues.[4] A person familiar with the matter told one outlet that there are “multiple federal investigations into people around Newsom,” including a probe tied to Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s taxes and nonprofit organizations.[2] That suggests there may be concrete financial questions, not just vague political drama.

Coverage also points to past scrutiny of how major corporations that depend on state decisions donated to Siebel Newsom’s nonprofits. For example, utility companies and other large firms have reportedly given money to her organizations while also seeking favorable treatment in Sacramento.[5] That pattern, if confirmed, could raise pay-to-play concerns that any honest Justice Department must take seriously. At the same time, no charging documents, warrants, or case numbers are public, so the exact legal theory of the case is still hidden.[4][6]

Did Trump personally direct the DOJ — or is this standard law enforcement?

Newsom flatly says “Donald Trump directed his Department of Justice to investigate me,” turning a possible corruption or tax probe into a story about Trump’s supposed revenge.[6] So far, though, there is no public document backing his claim that Trump personally ordered this case. Reporters quoting sources familiar with the matter say the investigations were initiated by federal law enforcement in California, based on government witnesses in that jurisdiction, not launched out of Washington, D.C. That suggests local agents and career staff may have started the work on their own.

Sources also tell national outlets that at least one of the investigations began roughly a year ago and grew out of a whistleblower complaint, with another tied to his former chief of staff’s federal guilty plea in a campaign money scheme.[3][5] If those accounts are accurate, the Department of Justice may be following leads that would have been hard to ignore under any administration. The department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have declined public comment so far, which is standard but also fuels speculation on both sides.[3][4]

Why this matters for conservatives and the rule of law

For many conservatives, there is a simple test: is the law applied evenly, or only when it hits the other side? Newsom is the same governor who pushed aggressive pandemic rules, hard-left cultural policies, and heavy regulation that hurt small businesses and gun owners, while his own circle often seemed to play by different rules. Now that federal agents are asking questions about taxes, nonprofits, and political money, he is suddenly warning about “weaponized” government power.[6]

At this point, the public still lacks key facts: the subpoenas, affidavits, and formal charges, if any, are not available. That means no one outside the investigation can yet prove whether this is selective enforcement or overdue accountability. What conservatives can demand, however, is the same thing they want in every case: a Justice Department that pursues real evidence of wrongdoing, respects due process, and does not back down just because a powerful progressive shouts “politics” when the spotlight finally turns on his own house.[4][6]
