It’s official. President Donald Trump is announcing a new program in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. The new program is a $19 billion infrastructure package meant to help feed hungry families amid one of the worst financial disasters in recent history.

The package is meant to mostly help struggling farmers who have been hit very hard recently. To help the situation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will purchase crops and livestock from farmers and ranchers facing a steep decline in orders and massive supply chain disruption. Funding will come from the $2.2 trillion coronavirus economic relief bill and separate USDA funds to support commodity prices.

According to The Hill, the USDA will then offer $16 billion in direct grants to farmers and ranchers to compensate for short-term drops in demand and oversupply driven by the coronavirus pandemic.

But that’s not all.

The department will also purchase $3 billion in fresh produce, dairy, and meat to distribute to food banks, community organizations and charities.

Trump announced the program yesterday at the White House, saying:

“These are great people, great Americans. Never complain — they just do what they have to do.”

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue also chimed in to explain why this deal was so important:

“The wholesome food that our families depend upon and starts with America’s farmers and ranchers. American agriculture has been hard hit like most of America with the coronavirus and President Trump is standing with our farmers and all Americans to make sure we all get through this national emergency.”

This is exactly what makes President Donald Trump such a great leader. Our nation’s infrastructure is very strong, but it’s in times like these that it needs an extra boost to stay alive. And that’s what Donald Trump is giving it. An extra boost.

If we can survive these next few weeks until the economy opens back up again, our nation will immediately be able to get back on its feet again. But in the meantime, we have to make sure farmers have the ability to produce food.
