At least 17 people have been confirmed dead – including two pilots – after a commercial aircraft with 191 passengers on board skidded off the runway and crashed into a valley.
According to the Daily Mail, The Air India flight left from Dubai and overshot the runway in Calicut, Kerala after pilots tried to force a landing in heavy rain. The crash left the aircraft torn in two, according to reports.
According to the reports, two pilots tried to land the plain after a trip from Dubai in Calicut, Kerala. The plane missed the runway and skidded into a 30ft-deep valley.
The pilots tried to circle the airport before the fatal crash, but eventually made the decision to try to land in spite of the heavy rain.
A local policeman from the community told press that the situation is still developing, but at the time, 14 deaths were confirmed and 15 passengers were hospitalized with very serious injuries:
“I can confirm at least 14 deaths overall. Another 15 passengers have critical injuries. It is still a developing situation.”
Another police official confirmed that 89 people were rushed to hospitals. Many of the passengers had very serious injuries:
“We have at least 89 people, many of them with serious injuries, admitted at different Kozhikode hospitals. The ambulances are still coming in.”
One television channel reported there had been a problem with the jet’s landing gear at the time of the crash, but officials are still investigating the cause of the issue.
